Peccioli: yesterday and today

The village of Peccioli, located in the province of Pisa in Tuscany, is a place that tells the story of the region and its people. Its history has its roots in ancient history, as demonstrated by the archaeological remains of the Etruscan era found nearby. The medieval village of Peccioli, with its defensive walls and castle, was built around the year one thousand. Over the centuries, Peccioli played an important role as a centre of trade and ceramic production, an activity that still characterizes the area today. During the Renaissance, Peccioli became an important cultural centre, with the opening of the municipal library, which today houses around 60,000 volumes, including many rare and precious manuscripts. The village was also the birthplace of the famous mathematician and philosopher Giovanni Domenico Cassini, who worked at the court of Louis XIV in Versailles. Throughout history, Peccioli suffered numerous battles and invasions, but always managed to recover thanks to its hardworking people and their resilience. Today, the village is an important tourist destination thanks to its beauty, history and culture: in recent decades they have acquired a reputation as a contemporary art centre, deserving the Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club. One of the main examples of this fusion between tradition and contemporary art is the Peccioli Collection, an important collection housed in Palazzo Pretorio, a historic 14th century building located in the heart of the city. The collection includes works by Italian and international artists such as Sol Lewitt, Giovanni Anselmo, Anish Kapoor, and many others. In addition, Peccioli hosts several art exhibitions each year, including the annual “Arte in Contemporanea” exhibition held at the Peccioli Collection. This exhibition features works by emerging and established artists, covering a range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, video and installations. However, Peccioli’s cultural tradition remains well rooted, and the city regularly hosts events related to music, theatre, literature and local crafts. This has created a unique environment where contemporary art and cultural tradition can coexist and interact, resulting in a unique cultural experience for Peccioli’s visitors and residents. Peccioli is also known for its wine and olive oil production, and offers many opportunities to discover Tuscan flavours. The village also hosts folkloristic events, such as the Medieval Festival and the Wild Boar Festival, which attract visitors from all over the world.
